Awnings maintenance

In addition to adding a touch of elegance to outdoor spaces, awnings play a crucial role in regulating sunlight and maintaining a comfortable environment. However, in order for them to continue to do their job effectively over time, it is essential to devote adequate attention to awnings maintenance.

Why awning maintenance is important

The maintenance of awnings is very important to ensure their effectiveness over time. In fact, regular maintenance contributes significantly to prolonging the life of blinds, preserving them from the weather, dust and harmful UV rays.

This also ensures that the structure maintains its integrity over time, avoiding damage that could require costly repairs or even replacement of the entire system.

Additionally, since awnings can also improve the energy efficiency of a building, good maintenance ensures that this benefit lasts over time.

Therefore, ensuring the proper functioning of the awnings’ opening and closing mechanism is essential to preserve their functionality. Proper maintenance ensures that the blinds are ready for use when needed, effectively fulfilling their role as environmental regulators.

In addition, regular maintenance makes it possible to detect any damage or structural problems at an early stage, so that more serious situations can be prevented and more costly interventions can be carried out.

Let’s not forget the aesthetic aspect, which is another crucial aspect of tent maintenance. Awings that are clean and in good condition significantly improve the visual appearance of a house or building, adding a touch of care and attention to detail.

Maintenance tips for awnings

Maintenance of awnings should be done periodically so that the condition of the structure is always under control. Every month it is a good idea to carry out a visual check of the awning structure, carefully inspecting the frame, supports and opening and closing mechanisms for signs of damage or wear.

At least every quarter the curtains should be cleaned using a soft brush to remove dust, dirt and debris. Every six months, however, a more thorough check of the tissue, fasteners and screws should be performed to ensure that they are firmly anchored. Finally, at least once a year, a more thorough cleaning must be carried out.

Control at the beginning of the season

Before starting the spring or summer season, a complete check of the awnings must be carried out. We start by carefully inspecting the structure, the supports and the opening and closing mechanisms. We then check the fabric for tears or signs of deterioration.

Finally, it must be ensured that all fixings are firmly anchored and that there are no blockages in the mechanisms.

Wash awnings regularly

To maintain the performance of awnings, regular awning cleaning should be scheduled, preferably every quarter or at least once a year. No special products are needed, preferably a mild detergent, non-aggressive specifically for outer fabrics. Too strong detergents may damage the fabric.

Both the top and bottom of the fabric must then be cleaned, removing dust, dirt and any stains.

Close them in case of strong winds

In strong winds, it is preferable to close the awnings to avoid damage to the structure. Gusts of wind can put stress on the canvas and supporting mechanisms. Closing the awnings, on the other hand, reduces the risk of damage and preserves their integrity over time.

Don’t close awnings when they are wet

If awnings are wet, they should not be closed because if the fabric is damp, it may develop mould or bad odours. Moreover, closing them under these conditions could contribute to the formation of unwanted stains.

One must always wait until the fabric is completely dry before closing the curtains again, even after washing.

Checking mechanical parts

The mechanical parts of awnings, such as hinges, chains, pulleys and fastening mechanisms, are part of the structure of the awnings and deserve just as much attention as upholstery. Semi-annually, it is a good idea to lubricate the moving parts with specific products to prevent wear and improve function.

The latest generation of awnings, such as Gaviota awnings, have the advantage of being made of high-quality materials, supported by aluminium frames that have a higher durability. This does not detract from the fact that good maintenance can prolong their effectiveness even further.
